Covered Individuals

Personnel who are required to use a respirator, or who use respirators or disposable masks voluntarily, are covered by this program.

Program Overview

Some work performed by Apple employees and contractors may involve exposure to airborne contaminants.  Apple EHS performs industrial hygiene surveys of areas where there is potential for exposure to airborne hazardous substances.  Where feasible, engineering or administrative controls are implemented to maintain employee exposures to these contaminants below regulatory levels or established Apple standards.  Personal respiratory protection equipment shall be used in areas where engineering and administrative controls are not feasible or do not provide enough protection to achieve compliance with regulatory levels.

An EHS assessment is required to evaluate respiratory hazards in the workplace and to select the appropriate respirator or disposable mask for the process.  Complete the Respiratory Protection Assessment Request Form to request for an EHS assessment.

Required Use of Respirators

If EHS has determined that respiratory hazard exists in the workplace and a respirator is required for the employee, the employee must:

  • Undergo a medical evaluation and Pulmonary Function Test at an Apple designated clinic before initial use and annually thereafter.
  • Complete Respiratory Protection training before initial use and and annually thereafter.
  • Contact EHS to arrange medical evaluation and training.

Voluntary Use of a Respirators

If EHS has determined that a respirator is not required but the employee wants to voluntarily use a respirator in their workplace, the employee must:

  • Undergo a medical evaluation and Pulmonary Function Test at an Apple designated clinic before initial use and annually thereafter.
  • Take the online training for Voluntary Respirator Use (EHS-2730)  initially and annually thereafter.
  • Order your respirator and cartridges with EHS.
  • Obtain a copy of the Appendix D from OSHA Standard 1910.134 on Mandatory Information for Employees Using Respirators When not Required Under Standard.
  • Contact EHS to arrange medical evaluation and training.

Voluntary Use of Disposable Dust Masks

If the employee wants to voluntarily use disposable masks in their workplace, the employee must:

  • Take the online training for  Voluntary Dust Mask Use (EHS-2740) initially.
  • Obtain a copy of the Appendix D from OSHA Standard 1910.134 on Mandatory Information for Employees Using Respirators When not Required Under Standard.
